A new storefront in downtown Calipatria is bringing more than one small business through its doors.

The Imperial Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce recently celebrated the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting of North Star Treasures, a new shop created by Sylvia Chavez to give local artisans, crafters and entrepreneurs a place to showcase their work.
During the ceremony, IVRCC President Victor Nava described North Star Treasures as a business built around “dreams, family, creativity and community.” And its story is very much a family one.
A Small Dream That Grew
As Victor Nava shared with guests, Sylvia's original vision was inspired by two things: creating a collaborative space for local creators and finding a special place for the work of her grandson, Angel. For years, Angel has created angel-inspired figurines, and Sylvia dreamed of finding a home where his creations could be displayed and shared with others.
That idea eventually grew into North Star Treasures.
Today, the shop can bring together up to 25 local vendors under one roof, with handcrafted items, collectibles, jewelry, candles, pottery, designer handbags, custom pieces, gifts and more.
But as our president Victor Nava emphasized during the ceremony, what sets the shop apart is not simply what is on the shelves. It is “the heart behind every item.” Each product represents someone's time, talent, creativity and passion.
Supporting More Than One Local Business
North Star Treasures was created around the idea of collaboration and giving local entrepreneurs an opportunity to grow together. For shoppers, that means one visit can support several small businesses and creators at the same time.
As Nava told attendees, when customers shop at North Star Treasures, “you're not just buying a product — you're supporting someone's dream.”
That mission also carries special meaning for Sylvia because North Star Treasures represents an investment in her hometown of Calipatria.
Her hope is for the store to become a welcoming place where residents and visitors can discover something different, meet local creators and continue supporting the talent found throughout our region.
Welcome to Calipatria, North Star Treasures
The ribbon cutting included recognition from community and government representatives, along with an IVRCC certificate commemorating the milestone. Nava also recognized Patty from Divinne Designs for providing the ribbon used during the ceremony.
Congratulations to Sylvia Chavez, Angel, and all of the North Star Treasures vendors on bringing this collaborative vision to life.
The next time you're in Calipatria, stop in, explore the different vendors and see what treasures you can find while supporting local entrepreneurs along the way.
